Disinformation Age: Spreading Fake News

MOSECO hosted the third online panel discussion on November 2 under the name Disinformation Age: Spreading Fake News. Our one-hour Zoom event focused on what causes spreading misinformation and fake news, and why it goes mostly unmonitored and unpunished in case serious information are being spread and cause harm to businesses, campaigns, and individuals.

Since social media is now mostly the primary source of information and has substituted the traditional news sources, much of the news shared, both true and false, can be particularly misleading. The current media scene is witnessing unprecedented polarization, creating divisions between groups of people, but also encouraging hate speech. Manipulating information poses a great risk with disastrous effects, especially to the Arab region, resulting in prolonging conflicts and tensions between communities.
Thus, in our panel we examined the most suitable ways to tackle misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, their prevention, and spreading. Panelists discussed ways of how to check for the information accuracy, and ways to reach transparent information and thus prevent fake news from reaching people via social media platforms and online news information hubs.

Objectives:
  • Raise awareness of fake news and how fast they are spreading
  • Highlight technologies such as bots which promote fake news spreading
  • Examine the influence on the general population and how these things can be resolved

Target Audience:
  • Governmental Institutions
  • Educational & research centers
  • Entertainment institutions
  • Businesses & Entrepreneurs
  • Funding Agencies & Banks
